What qualifies someone as a geek? There's SO much more to it than the generalized stereotype of social akwardness, Unix and MMORPGs... What do you think?

Re: What makes a geek a geek?
Sat, April 16, 2005 - 11:17 PMWait... somebody laid it all out for me once, the difference between a geek, a nerd & a dork.
A geek is somebody who rocks some particular subject harder than anyone else - be it UNIX or physics or Angel Fish breeding. In my field, digital art, geek is a no-kidding compliment.
Geek social awkwardness comes from having such a no-holds-barred devotion to something, that people take second place.
That's what I understand the word to mean.
Nerds are socially awkward, LARPG gamers, wear pocket protectors, are trekkies &tc. Geeks are often nerds, but not always.
Dorks are just out there. In geekdom, dork is not a compliment.
That's how I always understood it, anyway. -

in a dorkless world.
Sun, April 24, 2005 - 2:59 PMi agree with you Rendall.
geeks take the time to find the problems and the anwsers
so the
geeks are the ones to bite the false head of the future off.
and geeks give the time it takes to let the real one become seen and known.
geeks make the seeds, the nerds bring the care that they can't give themselves to keep the change going with the right kind of protection that dorks don't understand and geeks don't have the time for, as they are working on making the ground growable for the next harvest. -
